Postmodern top up

For your card set and revision:

Here is a punchy slide show; only take note of material that is new to you

A Video presentation Here that is a good tour of Postmodern theory,  A good section on war that might help make sense of 'Boom Beach'.  Get past the tone of voice and make notes.

Following on from the work we did on Lady GaGa, Here is a Prezi that examines the references that she makes to other texts in her videos; answer the questions at the end to get the most from the Prezi.

Here is a massive slideshow that covers most of the theory; use it as a checklist and only note what is new....

Here is another that also includes some Genre Theory

Work for Tuesday

1.  Hand in the Artist essay to Mrs Rimell in reception; make sure your name is on the work
2.  Postmodern Cards.  I will issue a template tomorrow that prints on avery size labels.  In Word,
create short (8-10 word) summaries of all Postmodern key terms, examples and theorists.  Use the
notes you made from the group last week and the posts on the blog and the handouts I have given
     you.
Aim to create at least 30 cards today.  save the work.
3.  Advanced production.  Post your time plans to hit the deadline set last week.
4.  Cut and shape your footage further.
5.  Check Blog; all research, planning and permissions posted?  Variety of presentations used?

See you Wednesday.

Feedback Advanced Production Blogs

New Year Update on the Advanced Productions
After reviewing your online portfolios please respond to the following issues that apply to all of you in varying degrees (I will highlight those which especially apply to you individually in lessons):
Animatics: at least two of these are required with a clear amount of evaluation and audience feedback
Audience Research: a previous post supported this but there is no clear evidence that the techniques suggested have been trialled
First Footage; this is either not posted or posted with minimum evaluation; please reflect on your first pieces of filmed and photographed work in terms of intended effect and Genre
Genre: After our work on this I expect more material reflecting on your intentions in this regard (remember this is also an exam topic s a 'win-win')
Representation: after an initial post a reflection on this theme is rather lacking in your blogs; have you fallen prey to any 'false consciousness' in your first decisions?
Media Language: this should be a running theme in the posts as you adapt, refine and adjust your use of various devices and codes; it is not at present
Real Media Contexts: A consideration of what the nearest 'real media' rival to your work is; what makes it different and what changes you have made and why- this applies to everyone
Avoiding too much text: many of you are using more software in order to present ideas; more variety is still required (sound files and vodcasts are still rarely sighted)

This will be reviewed by Tuesday 13th January; please address the above by then.

Year 13: The male gaze and your work

Examine your Year 12 pieces and any sketches you have made for Year 13 production work.  Bring together a knowledge of Media Language, an awareness of Representation and a consideration of Mulvey's ideas in addressing this question.

Considering your work to date, discuss how your practical work has been constructed to empower certain groups as well as any decisions that may have disempowered those represented.  You may refer to any work created during the course.

Resources to examine:
  • Foundation production blogs and pieces (look at each others work)
  • Today's theorists
  • the Examiner's report (ensure you do not misuse a key theorist)

Year 12 and13 Practical Resources

Here is a great resource for British Film Study(12) and Trailer Makers (13); an urban British Film with some great notes on film and trailer construction.

Here is a set of resources all linked to Opening Sequences. Produced by the Brish Film Institute, they analyse a wide range of opening sequences in terms of narrative and audience. Goiod for Year 12 especially.

Here is a set of powerpoints for all filmakers and Year Year 12 students revising for the Unseen TV Drama paper. Good on Lighting and film styles especiallly...

Here is a link to 'Den of Geek'. This is a hardcore film obsessive world but this page breaks down a trailer in frame by frame analysis and has some good reader comments about film making and trailers at the bottom. Careful you don't get recruited as a Film Geek.

Here is a Blog by a student exploring aspects of magazine layout and design. A bit thin on analysis but some excellent examples posted to illustrate her ideas and tastes..

Here is the first page of a glossary for Desktop publishing. A bit long but Year 12s doing magazines and Year 13s doing an ancillary Print task should use some specialist terms from here. make some notes and use them.

Easter Homework for JJ

You need to complete the table for historical, contemporary and future developments re:postmodern media.

Then, using that as a starting point, write a more detailed description (hopefully using your own research, not just the texts we've covered in class) for each 'box' you've filled in. It should also make reference to theory (you can reference the chapter from Strinati that I photocopied for you). The whole thing should then be the equivalent length/detail of an essay.

Remember that 'contemporary' really means something made in the last five years.

Deadline is Wednesday 21st April.

Happy Easter!

Media and Collective Identity
Discuss the contemporary representation of a nation, region or social group in the media, using specific textual examples from at least two media to support your answer.

Deadline is Friday 26th February. I won't be accepting any essays after that date and I'm looking for around 2 sides of A4 please.
